Hickory Dickory – by James Baker
Cute? Creepy? And how on earth was this all put together? As filmmaker James Baker says:
It’s maker, James Baker: ‘Hickory Dickory’ was originally made as part of the Filmaka Feature Film Competition where it won one of the entry level places. The competition theme was ‘race against the clock’ which I decided to interpret in a fairly abstract way while still remaining on topic. The film uses an unusual technique of live-action puppetry overlaid with translucent animation and compositing. I came up with this approach partly due to its efficiency compared to full animation and partly because of its subtly strange quality. The film’s editing style is structured around rhythmic patterns which build up into a trance like suspense. A mismatch is also created between the image and its expected sound, resulting in synesthesiastic combinations.
At the moment I am producing more moving image work in a similar vein to this; using live-action puppets and performers in an illustrative and expressionistic manner. In addition to consolidating ideas for larger projects I am currently designing and making some moving image sequences of anthropomorphised bacteria for an NHS website.
